A new beginning… SandyPhimester.com

I have a new website, nothing much else to say, this current one (Midnightportraits.com) will no longer be updated with any photos or videos. This is the last post, it’s been great, but learning and moving forward also means change. The new website can be found here: SandyPhimester.com !!

I’ve certainly gone in a different direction since I started MidnightPortraits, and I’m glad to have the chance to move into a new direction so smoothly. Thanks for your continuing support and kind words. See you on the other side (at my new website/blog haha).

Jen and Kyle

I know, I know, the website is changing and I’m starting a new one, once it’s all ready (by next week at the latest) I will do a huge update about what’s all happening and why, etc. etc. No worries, until then, please have a quick look at the stuff I’ve been busy with (again, part of a change, I’m still doing lots of Fashion and Editorial type stuff, but all will be explained shortly) lately.

Meet Jen and Kyle, a very fun couple, who were a real joy to work with, not only were they easy to get along with, but they also held up a great conversation, as we walked around it was soon obvious that this would be a really fun shoot, we spent some time looking for the right type of location, they didn’t want anything too obvious or overly classic in feel. I just wanted to go with the flow and capture it in a more natural way.

I’ve been going through some harder times with family lately, and I had to take a few weeks off from shooting, now that I’m slowly getting back into it, I look at this shoot and feel confident that it’s exactly the type of thing I needed to kick start my obsession with photography all over again.

Change

I’m just finishing up some last minute (and I mean last minute) tasks before I head to the airport for Cuba, a photography project awaits me there, and I’m very excited. I’ll be helping to document foreign rock and roll (That’s Canadian rock and roll) as a band tours across the country of Cuba. The project has two main points are far as my perspective is concerned, first is to capture the cultural scene there for art and music, and the second is to create portraits of the people that we meet and interact with. It’s something really special…

… something that will transition really well into the next chapter of my journey as a photographer. When I get back there are a few landmark projects that I will be taking on and sharing with a few other photographers. And some personal projects of my own that will be taken underway as soon as I get back. I can’t say too much at the moment, but believe me, it will be quite interesting. A new name for the business, and a new direction are all in store when I get back. Think of this trip to Cuba as the jump off point for the rest of my career. I’m excited. I’ll report back as soon as I return to Canada.

Thank you!

Classic pin up!

This was a shoot for a local store, Rowena, which sells a lot of retro clothes and accessories (and a lot of other non vintage and other neat items!), this shoot was also a lesson in changing plans on the go! The original backdrop we were going to use was great, but it turned out to be a little to small to really work how we wanted it to. So instead of trying to make it work by shooting it with the small backdrop and hopefully fixing it later in editing, I decided to scrap the original idea altogether and use colored lights to change the color of the wall behind the girls as we shot. That, along with the classic type of lighting on them, made for a much nicer shoot in the end. A fun day!

Night Work: Pathways

My second installment in the NIGHT WORK series. Much thanks go to Karin, Dave, Harvey and Mario for helping make this possible when it comes to lending a hand (or gear required). Thanks to Felicia for the make up work, and a big thank you to Michelle for doing a great job and putting up with the cold winter evening.

Common Knowledge

Last set of photos from the most recent studio shoot, big thanks to everyone who helped make it possible, and big thanks to Jacqueline (and Kyla) for putting up with the wait times between shooting. It was worth it though, and I’m glad, as everyone had a good time and it was nice to meet so many great folks that day. Thank you!

Make Up: Manuela Ella Bonanni

Model: Jacqueline

Headdress and Jewelry: Natasha Lazarovic

Moonlit Beauty

In the studio again, working with some wonderful pieces from Natasha Lazarovic, who was kind enough to lend some of her older work, as well as some of her newer items to us for the shoot. Generally speaking the whole day was pegged as a test shoot, but that doesn’t mean we can’t get some great results in the end! Getting to meet new people, great folks who love what they do, who are just teeming with creativity and life, that’s what this is really all about. It was a pleasure to work alongside all these fantastic people who excel in everything they do. Kyla, the wonderful model in the photos was a pleasure to work with, and I consider myself lucky to have worked with her on this, we both really wanted to get some great work done!

I’m still assembling some credits and the rest of this write up, I’ll update this post shortly with the rest! Thank you all!!

Yoga Session

With this shoot the aim was to go for a more simple and clean fitness look, in terms of style and presentation, it had to be extremely straight forward and elegant. The lighting was the main key to success here, for a more commercial based look, a lot of care and attention was put into placement and technical aspects of the studio set up. Trying to learn these things in the real world is the main goal of the work that goes on behind the scenes, behind the finished product. As usual, a lot of fun was had, and a lot of lessons were learned, things to take away from the experience and apply to the next one, and so on.

Mario, a fellow photographer and good friend of mine, was shooting Cassie for the shoot, and I was shooting Becca, near the end Cassie said “You know we can do doubles Yoga poses, right?”…… and well with that we got some pretty interesting shots, to say the least! Something I had never seen before actually, so it was quite a nice surprise.

Having a great team behind and beside you is what really makes these shoots a joy to work on, Felicia was there to do the make up for our yoga look, Becca and Cassie were there to give us great Yoga poses and be our models for the day, and again, no shortage of thanks to Studio-E for allowing us into the space to work on our ideas. Thank you, everyone.
